Chandigarh: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra today said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had imposed an undeclared Emergency in Punjab by throttling the voice of the farmers, influence makers and politicians and appealed to the people to unite to protect civil liberty.
Addressing a press conference here, Prof Chandumajra said the AAP government had forced people to remember the infamous Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He said just like in the Emergency, chief minister Bhagwant Mann was using the law enforcement authorities to curb civil rights of its opponents. “Influence makers, including the media, are being suppressed. So also are farmer leaders and politicians who are being denied freedom of movement just because they want to express solidarity with those who have fallen victim to the excesses of the AAP government”.
Condemning the government for putting senior leaders under house arrest and restricting their movement, Prof Chandumajra said “chief minister Bhagwant Mann should understand that Punjabis cannot be repressed in this manner”. He said as far as the SAD was concerned, it had always stood up against the Emergency and it could not be intimidated by such actions.
Prof Chandumajra also appealed to all right thinking people, including other political parties, to extend support to the Punjab Bachao Yatra. He said the Yatra had been organized to expose the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as well as all other forces that were against Punjab and Punjabiyat. “We feel a conspiracy is afoot to suppress Punjabis and make them subservient to Delhi. Punjabis will never tolerate this and the SAD will also be in the forefront in the fight to safeguard the interests of the State”, the SAD leader added.
