Custodial Death-Report sought from Home Secretary
Chandigarh (Dr. Abhinav Kalra) The Punjab State Human Rights Commission comprising of Hon’ble Chairperson Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari, Hon’ble Member Ashutosh Mohunta and Hon’ble Member Ms. Avinash Kaur taking suo-motu cognizance of custodial death matter and called for report from the State Govt. in the Home Department, through, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran on or before the next date i.e. 05.08.2020.The Commission perused the news-item under the caption “Police di Kutt Maar Naal Naujwan Di Maut ”. It reveals that two persons, namely, Mandeep Singh and Angrez Singh, who had been taken to Police Station Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran, in a case of alleged theft of motorcycle, were tortured in police custody. That Mandeep Singh was released when his condition became critical and he died soon after reaching his home. It is further alleged by the daughter of Mandeep Singh that police have also demanded money for releasing him.
The Commission took suo moto cognizance of the matter and called for a report from the State Govt. in the Home Department, through, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran, before the next date of hearing. copy of the order, along with a copy of the news-item be sent to the DGP, Punjab; DGP, Human Rights, Punjab, Chandigarh and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran, for compliance.
