Governor Banwari Lal Purohit Empowers Disadvantaged Talented Students with Rs 20 Lac Scholarships and Certificates of Appreciation

Chandigarh: In a significant move towards fostering education among the underprivileged, Governor Shri Banwari Lal Purohit, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Society for Empowerment of Disadvantaged Talented Youth, distributed scholarships and Certificates of Appreciation amounting Rs 20 lac to 300 meritorious students from Class 8th and 10th of Punjab and U.T. Chandigarh.

 The initiative aimed to recognize and support outstanding students from government schools who demonstrated exemplary academic performance. The Society, originally established in 2006 by the then Governor of Punjab, had become inactive after a few years due to various reasons. Governor Purohit took the proactive step of reviving the Society to continue its mission of empowering talented students from the weaker sections of society. In a Governing Body meeting, it was decided to award scholarships to students who excelled in the 8th and 10th classes during the academic year 2022-23. A total of 300 students were selected, with 75% from Punjab and 25% from U.T. Chandigarh, ensuring a comprehensive reach across the region. 

 The scholarship distribution ceremony took place at Punjab Raj Bhawan, where Governor Banwari Lal Purohit personally handed out scholarships and Certificates of Merit to the elated recipients. The breakdown of the scholarship distribution is as follows: - 8th Class: 200 students receiving Rs. 5000 each - 10th Class: 100 students receiving Rs. 10,000 each The total scholarship amount disbursed amounted to Rs. 20 lacs, a substantial contribution towards supporting the educational aspirations of the disadvantaged talented youth. Each scholarship was accompanied by a Certificate of Merit, personally signed by the Hon’ble Governor, recognizing the students' exceptional achievements. 

 In his address during the ceremony, Governor Banwarilal Purohit emphasized the importance of education as a tool for empowerment and encouraged the recipients to continue striving for excellence in their academic pursuits. He also talked at length about importance of character building, time management developing the attributes of honesty, kindness, empathy, truthfulness and compassion for fellow beings. Amongst others, prominent people present on the occasion included Additional Chief Secretary to Governor Punjab, Mr. K. Siva Prasad, Principal Secretary Education, Punjab Mr. KK Yadav, Secretary Education, Chandigarh, Ms. Hargunjit Kaur and Secretary Punjab Red Cross, Mr. Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon.
