SAD to hold dharnas in Patiala, Mansa and Shahkot to demand justice for flood ravaged farmers

Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today decided to hold dharnas in Patiala, Mansa and Shahkot to demand justice for flood ravaged farmers who are being denied compensation by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government besides deciding to launch a 45 day Punjab Bachao movement from September 30 to force the corrupt AAP government to fulfill promises made to the people.

The SAD core committee, which met under the presidentship of S Sukhbir Singh Badal, decided to send a delegation to Manipur and Nuh to assess the situation and demand solace for the victims of ethnic violence. It condemned the communal violence in Nuh in Haryana and the government’s failure to maintain law and order. It also passed a resolution against the failure of the Minority Commission to safeguard the interests of victims in both Manipur and Nuh and its inability to even go to the conflict areas.

The core committee also demanded the immediate dismissal of cabinet ministers Lalchand Kataruchak and Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal for colluding with each other to promote and transfer a BDPO and even giving him charge of the office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Pathankot to transfer 100 acres of mineral rich panchayati land to the sand mafia. It also demanded that the ministers not be allowed to hoist the national flag on Independence Day tomorrow.

Speaking on the injustice being done to farmers and those whose houses had been damaged and even destroyed due to floods last month, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal said “no compensation has been received by anyone till yet which has aggravated the economic condition of the peasantry”. He demanded the release of compensation at the rate of Rs 50,000 per acre for all farmers whose standing paddy crop had been destroyed. He also asserted that compensation at the rate of Rs 5 lakh should be given to those whose houses had been damaged due to floods while householders whose houses had been completely damaged should be paid compensation of Rs 20 lakh.

The committee also decided to send a five member delegation comprising Balwinder Singh Bhundur, Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Paramjit Singh Sarna and Dr Sukwinder Sukhi to Manipur and Nuh to assess the latest situation in the State as well as demand relief and compensation of victims of ethnic cleansing. The committee will also hold meetings with the victims as well as women bodies in the wake of horrible crimes against women.

It was also decided to launch a 45 day Punjab Bachao movement from September 30 in all constituencies of the State to expose the AAP government and its chief minister – Bhagwant Mann who had failed on all fronts. The movement will be people centric and focus on how the people are suffering be it denial of social welfare benefits, jobs to youth, worsening of the law and order situation, failure to control drug menace, flight of industry from the State as well as failure to fulfill election promises. The ongoing village level programme – Har Sath mein Akali Dal will continue till then.

The core committee also decided that except panchayat elections, the SAD would contest all other elections including the panchayat samiti, zila parishad, corporation and committee elections on the party symbol in league with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). It also condemned the government’s decision to dissolve panchayats as well as delay in holding elections to the local bodies. It also flayed NIA raids on Khalsa Aid besides harassment meted out to United Kingdom MP Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi.

The core committee also paid glowing tributes to Sardarni Nirmal Kaur (wife of Ex President of SGPC S Kirpal Singh Badungar) and S Gurpartap Singh Pannu (husband of Jalandhar Istri Akali Dal President Bibi Parminder Kaur Pannu). A two-minute silence was observed in memory of departed souls as a mark of respect during the obituary references.
