Chandigarh (Aditi) The Punjab State Human Rights commission has taken suo-moto cognizance of spurious liquor deaths and has directed the chief Secretary & DGP to submit a report on the case.
In its harsh orders the chairperson Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari and members Justice Ashutosh Mohunta & Avinash Kaur have said that they have come across news, bearing the caption, “Spurious liquor kills 112 in Punjab and autopsy delay angers families”. A perusal whereof reveals that spurious liquor has claimed 112 lives in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Batala (Gurdaspur district), Punjab Government has ordered a magisterial probe and the angry villagers on Friday held a protest against the police Department for failing to curb bootlegging in the area despite the recent drive against liquor smuggling. Taking serious notice of the incident, this Commission takes cognizance of the matter and directs the Director General of Police, Punjab, to submit a detailed report in this regard, on or before the next date of hearing. This Commission is prima facie of the view that there is apathy on the part of the administration. Thus, this Commission directs the Chief Secretary, Punjab and the Director General of Police to submit detailed report in this regard, on or before the next date of hearing.
