Celebration of World Environment Day 2023 for Adopting ‘Lifestyle for Environment’


A monthly programme (may 5 th to June 5th 2023) has been organized to spread the awareness on Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) in Chandigarh to sensitize the general public on behavioural change in their day to day activities of the life which culminate on the eve of World Environment Day, 2023.


A State Level function to commemorate the WED 2023 with thrust area of LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) was organized by the Chandigarh Administration today at Tagore Theatre wherein Hon’ble Governor of Punjab & the Administrator, UT Chandigarh-Shri Banwari Lal Purohit was the Chief Guest.


Appreciating the efforts of Chandigarh Administration of organizing over 6800+ action events and 4000 + awareness events conducted over a period of just 30 days by involving nearly 10 percent of population of the city (1.44 lakh approx) who took pledge on mission LiFE whole heartedly.


Shri Banwarilal Purohit, Hon’ble Administrator shared that this year, it has been envisaged to celebrate World Environment Day with thrust on the Mission “LiFE” (Lifestyle for Environment) which is an global initiative introduced by our Hon'ble Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi ji at the World Leaders' Summit in Glasgow at the 2021 Climate Change Conference, when he gave a clarion call to rekindle a global pursuit to adopt sustainable lifestyle and practices.


Sh. Purohit also called upon people to “SNKALP LO” TO MAKE CHANDIGARH THE BEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY that is an ideal example of Clean, Green & Smart City by Pooling Vehicle, Switch To Electric Vehicles, Saving Trees Not Cutting It Mindlessly, Encourage Tree Planting especially the Youngsters, Say No To Plastic and Eliminate The Devil Single Use Plastic (SUP) from the city, check- & stop unauthorized building construction which damages the ecological balance of the environment in the city, uphold unity in saving the water resources especially the sukhna lake and ensure the greatness of following the laws of environment and the nature.


“On this special day, I commend the efforts of individuals, organizations, and communities who have been tirelessly working towards environmental conservation. On this World Environment Day, let us renew our commitment to protecting the environment and embrace the opportunity to make a lasting impact. Together, let us build a future where our natural resources are conserved, our ecosystems thrive, and every living being can flourish.”


Over 800 students, teachers, Principals of local schools and colleges along with many prominent citizens of the city also participated in the endeavour. The participating teachers and Principals were requested to instil in younger generations a deep-rooted respect and appreciation for the environment.


The State Level Eco Club Awards were also presented by the Chief Guest to total 11 Schools and Colleges in three categories. The better performing staff of Chandigarh Administration was recognized with certificate as an appreciation.


Present among others were Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Sh. R.K. Singh, I.G.P. and officials of Department of Environment, Forests & Wildlife, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee and other officers of the Chandigarh Administration.
