  • IN MASSIVE CRACKDOWN AGAINST DRUG SMUGGLERS, PUNJAB POLICE CONDUCTS CASO AT DRUG HOTSPOTS ACROSS STATE

    Chandigarh: To ensure fair, transparent and inducement-free Lok Sabha Elections in the state, the Punjab Police on Wednesday conducted a massive state-level Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at identified drug hotspots and vulnerable areas in all the 28 Police districts of the state. The operation was conducted on the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav from 8am to 11am simultaneously across the state. Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla said that CPs/SSPs were told to plan this operation meticulously by identifying drug Hotspots— the points of sale of drugs and psychotropic substances in their respective districts or certain areas which have become shelter/safe haven for drug peddlers, to carry out this operation amid massive deployment of the police force under the supervision of an SP rank officer. He said that CPs/SSPs were also directed to check all those booked under NDPS cases and are on bail/have been acquitted. “These kinds of CASOs at a mass-scale level not only help infuse fear among anti-social elements but also boost public confidence and increase the presence of the cops in the field,” he said. The Special DGP said that over 500 Police teams, comprising over 3000 police personnel, have cordoned off as many as 246 drug hotspots and as many as 864 persons— booked under NDPS cases and are on bail/have been acquitted— were checked. During the operation, the Police registered 31 first information reports (FIRs) after arresting 22 persons, besides, apprehending one Proclaimed Offender (PO), he said. Sharing outcomes, Spl DGP Arpit Shukla said that Police teams have recovered 2.95-Kg Heroin, ₹36000 drug money, 100 grams opium, 21.5kg poppy husk and a huge quantity of lahan, illicit and licit liquor, besides, seizing two pistols along with ammunition. Meanwhile, the operation was conducted after identifying drug hotspots through data analysis by district police forces.

  • Punjab CEO holds meeting with DCs, CPs and SSPs of state to review the preparation of Lok Sabha elections

    Chandigarh: Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab Sibin C on Wednesday chaired a meeting through video conference with all the Deputy Commissioners- cum- District Election Officers, Commissioner of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police of Punjab to discuss issues and review the progress of preparations with regard to conduct of upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024 in the state. During the meeting, the CEO Sibin C reviewed the arrangements about polling stations, deployment of polling staff, vulnerable mapping, Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities, webcasting, CRPF deployment, communication plan, interstate border as well as law and order situation among other arrangements to conduct a free and fair elections in the state. During the meeting, the status of various activities such as the EPIC, voters information, webcasting, EVM storage and transporting, check on fake news, identification of vulnerable polling areas, setting up more Model polling booths, law and order situation were reviewed and taken up with each district. The district officials have informed the CEO about the various activities and initiatives being taken by them to achieve the goal of 'Iss Vaar 70 Paar' in the elections. They reiterated their commitment to following all guidelines and practices prescribed by the ECI to conduct transparent and smooth elections. The CEO also enjoined upon the concerned to take adequate measures to mitigate the heat stroke to the polling staff through various measures at the training venue, dispersal centres, polling stations and collection centres. He asked the staff to make provision of shade, drinking water, waiting area, good quality toilets for all staff at the polling stations and counting centres. The CEO informed that a notification will be issued on May 7 for the seventh and last phase of voting in the state on the June 1. CEO apprised all the officials that the Election Commission is monitoring the progress of preparations of all activities and exhorted them to work with utmost coordination to complete all assigned tasks related to the conduct of the elections within prescribed timelines. On the occasion Special Director General of Police  Law and Order Arpit Shukla, Additional DGP cum State Police Nodal officer Mohammed Farooqui, Additional CEOs Harish Nayar and Abhijeet Kaplish, Joint CEO Sakkatar Singh Bal and other officials from the office of CEO were present in the meeting.

  • ORDER UNDER SECTION 144 Cr.P.C. regarding foreign travel agents

    Whereas, it has been made to appear before the District Magistrate that some travel agents are involved in fraudulent activities by deceiving and cheating citizens on the false pretext of arranging their visa or managing their affairs relating to sending persons abroad and such other related activities. They get published misleading advertisements in leading newspapers and dupe the innocent people of UT Chandigarh and neighbouring states and after sometime, they close their offices and run away from the city. The unlawful and fraudulent activities of these travel agents can cause danger to human life, health or safety of general public. AND whereas, Vinay Pratap Singh, LA.S., District Magistrate, Chandigarh, is of the opinion that some steps are warranted to keep a check upon the illegal activities of such travel agents so as to avoid any harm to the life, health and safety of general public. Now therefore, Vinay Pratap Singh, L.A.S., District Magistrate, U.T. Chandigarh in exercise of the power conferred upon him u/s 144 of the Cr.Pc., does hereby order as an emergency measure that all the foreign travel visa agents operating in the jurisdiction of UT Chandigarh shall provide their complete antecedent as prescribed in Performa attached herewith in writing to the office of Sub Divisional Magistrate of the concerned area for the purpose of information and verification of antecedents of their owners/operators/managers within 4 weeks from issuance of this order and those travel agents who are intended to operate shall get their antecedent verified within 4 weeks of starting of their business. For the purpose of clarification, a travel agent means a person doing the profession wh.ch involves arranging, managing, or conducting affairs relating to sending persons abroad. or which arise out of the affairs of persons sent to a foreign country, except for carrying out the business of recruitment being governed under the Emigration Act, 1983 (Central Act 31 of 1983), and shall include all or any of the following, namely: - (a) processing of applications for or relating to grant of passport or visa; or (b) acting as an agent for a company, firm or such type of bodies or entities for (i) selling air travel tickets; and (1) providing means of transportation for travel to a foreign country by land or sea; or (c) providing consultancy visa service or guidance to the persons intending to go abroad for (i) Acquiring education; (ii) Undertaking a pleasure trip as a tourist or traveller; (iii) Getting medical treatment. (iv) Arranging cultural entertainment or musical shows; (v) Spreading or preaching religious, or (vi) Participating in sports tournaments or events; or (d) giving an advertisement or publicity, which relates directly or indirectly to any field of travel to a foreign country by means of publications, transmissions, communication or interest; or (e) holding of seminars of delivering of lectures to promote emigration or rendering assistance for such purpose, or () arranging matrimonial alliances and adoptions for the purpose of emigration; or (g) arranging travel of any person from India to abroad for any purpose whatsoever or (h) acting as freelancing type tout for any of the purpose mentioned in clauses (a) to (g). airlines. It shall also include coaching institutes of IELTS, ticketing agents and general agents of 1 The SDM office shall maintain a record of travel agents operating in their jurisdiction 2. The SDM and SDPO of the concerned area shall ensure compliance of these orders by regular checking of travel agents operating in their respective jurisdictions. In view of the emergent nature of the order, it is being issued hereby ex-parte and is addressed to the public in general. Any breach of this order would invite action under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. This order shall come into force with effect from zero hours on 22/4/2024 and shall be effective for a period of sixty days up-to and including 20/6/2024.

    Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day, was celebrated with enthusiasm at KBDAV Senior Secondary Public School, Sector 7B Chandigarh on May 1st. This occasion provided an opportunity to students of Class XI & XII to appreciate the importance of labour rights and the contributions of school employees, engaged in various sectors of the School. Students of Class XI and XII, along with NSS Volunteers participated in an art and craft activity showcasing their creativity through posters, drawings, and paintings depicting themes related to the rights and labour issues. They made beautiful cards which were handed over to the helpers, aayas, gardeners, guards, conductors, drivers, sweepers and lady attendants of the school as a mark of their industrious contribution to the school.

  • MC run parking lots gear up for improved operations and enhanced revenue collection

    Chandigarh: In order to streamline parking and earn additional revenue, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has revamped the paid parking system after introducing digital payments through QR code aims to reduce opportunities for any kind of leakages and ensuring accuracy of revenue recorded. In order to avoid inconvenience to the visitors and to enhance revenue generation, several improvements have been introduced by the MC Chandigarh. Proper uniform and Identity Cards have been given to parking attendants for easy identification. Payable rate lists and instructions to customers have been displayed in all the paid parking lots. The Jana Small Finance Bank Ltd. has been associated for handling of collection of paid parking and facilities provided for management of paid parking lots. Visitors shall now be able to pay the parking fee through QR code scanner in 71 paid parking lots, which are being managed by the MC Chandigarh in sectors 5, 7, 8, 9, 17, 20, 22, 26, 34, 35, 43, Manimajra and Multiplexs of Chandigarh. As per the rate list, currently, Rs. 7/- for two wheelers and Rs. 14/- for four wheelers (non commercial), Rs. 28/- for LCV/Mini Bus, Service Jeep/Cab/Taxi/Three Wheeler and Rs. 70/- for Tourist Buses/HCV have been displayed in the rate list. These steps have been introduced to minimise the long queues of vehicles due to cash payments and cumbersome PoS machines at most of the parking lots, further leading to traffic chaos. Further , the parking staff deployed in all the paid parking lots have been provided new uniforms and Identity Cards so that visitors can identify the parking staff easily. These improvements aim to not only streamline the parking system for the visitors but also ensure better monitoring of collection of parking fee.

  • ‘People of Chandigarh no longer trust the false promises of BJP’: Dr. SS Ahluwalia

    Chandigarh: The promises made by BJP to the people of Chandigarh were never fulfilled. The promises made by BJP MP Kirron Kher to the people of Chandigarh before becoming MP were not fulfilled, said Dr. SS Ahluwalia, Chairman Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board and co-in-charge of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Chandigarh. Dr. Ahluwalia said, “During the last two Lok Sabha elections, BJP secured votes every time by making false promises to the people of Chandigarh. Now the residents of the city have come to know the truth of the false promises of the BJP and the residents of the city do not believe in the false promises of the BJP.” Dr. Ahluwalia said that BJP had promised the city residents before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections that after the formation of the BJP government, paid parking would be abolished in Chandigarh on which BJP MP Kirron Kher never paid attention and spent 10 years making false promises. Now when Mayor Kuldeep Kumar, after becoming the Mayor of India Alliance in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, passed a proposal to make the parking spaces of the city free, the BJP is stopping it from being implemented, so that the common people cannot get the benefit of it. He further said that BJP had made many false promises to the people of Chandigarh during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, which have not been fulfilled till date. A promise was made to open separate colleges for boys and girls in Manimajara. BJP had promised to make Chandigarh drug free and build a new stadium of international standards in the city. BJP never showed seriousness in fulfilling these promises and only made false promises to the city residents. He said that BJP had promised that playgrounds would be built in all the wards of the city. Employees recruited on contract will be confirmed, government employees will be given houses. Regular changes will be made in the houses and housing scheme will be implemented for the tenants. All these false promises were made by BJP to the people of Chandigarh during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He said that BJP had promised to run mono rail in the city, which turned out to be a false promise. Promises to settle issues related to the Chandigarh Housing Board, to allow first floor booths, to provide free Wi-Fi in all markets and to give priority to Chandigarh residents for jobs in the city remained only on paper. The promise of putting power lines underground also turned out to be false. Dr. Ahluwalia further said that BJP is deceiving the people by making false promises, the people of the city have now completely understood the fake face of BJP and the city residents are also yearning for basic amenities. In the Lok Sabha elections, the people of the city will completely wipe out the BJP from Chandigarh and will send India Alliance candidate Manish Tiwari to the Lok Sabha by winning with a huge vote, he added.

  • 100 youths, including Congress youth leader Dr Jitendra Singh Mann, join BJP

    Chandigarh: In yet another boost to the BJP, 100 youths, including Congress youth leader Dr Jitendra Singh Mann, joined the party today. Chandigarh BJP President Jatinder Pal Malhotra said it is the result of Prime Minister Modi's guarantees and his policies that today leaders of many political parties are eager to join the BJP. He was addressing the joining program at the party office in Kamalam on Tuesday. On this occasion, about 100 youth including Sahil Gupta, Rana Balachor, Sukhjit Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Saheb Singh, Sunny Rajput, Raki, Nishchay, Sonu, Karna and Ajay took membership of BJP and on this occasion BJP candidate Sanjay Tandon, BJP State General Secretaries Hukam Chand and Amit Jindal were present. Sanjay Tandon welcomed all the youths into the party and said they will be given full respect here. He appealed to the youth to follow the policies of the BJP in future and get involved in election campaigning and spread the message regarding development works done by Modi and the schemes run by him to the people. Ayushman Day was also celebrated in Kamalam on Tuesday. On this day, apart from BJP President Jatinder Pal Malhotra and BJP candidate Sanjay Tandon, Vice President Kailash Jain, General Secretaries Hukam Chand and Amit Jindal, a large number of members of those families who received health benefits through the Ayushman scheme run by the Government of India were present. They shared the scheme saved them from spending lakhs of rupees in hospitals. Tandon said Ayushman Bharat was started on this day. The health benefits that the family received by joining this scheme. He told the Prime Minister of the country has now prepared a plan to provide the benefit of this facility to all the people of India above 70 years of age. Under this scheme, any person of any age group above 70 years of age will get the benefit of medical facility up to Rs 5 lakh. He said this is the first time in the country when there is no news of government corruption in newspapers and TV. Modi has eliminated corruption. Now there is talk of development and not corruption in the country. In the program, he appealed to the families availing the benefits of Ayushman Yojana that in view of the good work done by the country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they should go door-to-door for the next 30 days and appeal to make the BJP victorious once again.

  • MORE THAN 100 LMT WHEAT ARRIVED IN STATE MANDIS SO FAR, 95 PERCENT PROCURED: ANURAG VERMA

    Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Secretary Anurag Verma today said that out of 100.58 LMT Wheat arriving so far in State’s grain markets more than 95 percent stands procured due to the uninterrupted procurement process. The farmers who have sold their produce have been paid for the same to the extent of 100 percent with Rs. 17340.40 in their bank accounts. During a meeting with the top officers of the procurement agencies and the Deputy Commissioners in order to review the procurement process, the Chief Secretary directed that it must be ensured that no farmer faces any kind of issues for selling his produce in the mandis and further, no stone should be left unturned to make robust arrangements for dealing with the situation arising due to the unseasonal rains. The Chief Secretary said that required facilities have been provided to facilitate the farmers, arhtiyas and the labourers to ensure smooth procurement. Divulging more, Mr. Anurag Verma said that  till now, a total of 100.58 LMT of Wheat has arrived in the state mandis out of which 95.83 LMT has been procured which is in excess of 95 pecent. Notably, during the present year 132 LMT of Wheat is expected to arrive in the mandis and in view of the abovesaid data, 75 percent produce is already there. The Chief Secretary also divulged that as per the rules of making payments within 48 hours, 100 percent payments have been made with Rs. 17340.40 in the accounts of the farmers. For lifting facilitation, today 27 special trains are running and the government is committed to procure every single grain.   • 'VOTING INVITATION' TO BE SENT TO VOTERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BIGGEST FESTIVAL OF DEMOCRACY - SIBIN C

    Chandigarh:   The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab has taken another unique initiative, as part of the campaign to achieve the goal of 'Is Vaar 70 Paar' in the Lok Sabha Elections-2024. In compliance with the guidelines of the Election Commission of India, this time all the Deputy Commissioners of Punjab will send 'Voting Invitation’ cards to the voters from door to door through the BLOs (booth level officers). Giving information in this regard, CEO Sibin C said that in order to ensure maximum participation of voters in the biggest festival of democracy, the Deputy Commissioners of all the districts will send an 'Voting Invitation’ to the voters, urging them to exercise their right to vote on June 1, 2024. These cards will be given door-to-door by the BLOs. Sibin C further informed that special election awareness campaigns are already being conducted in every district of the state on a large scale under SVEEP (Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation) and the objective of this initiative also is to achieve the target of 'Is Vaar 70 Paar', along with making the overall experience of the voters enjoyable and satisfying during the voting process. He stated that a QR code has also been given on the card, by scanning which, voters can also get information about their polling booth. Sibin C said that adequate arrangements are being ensured for the convenience of voters at every booth on the day of polling, including drinking water, waiting area, sheds, clean toilets for men and women, etc. The CEO appealed to the voters to actively participate in the Lok Sabha Elections-2024 and use their vote properly, contributing to the further strengthening of democracy.

    Mohali: Ashmah International School Sec-70 celebrated Labour Day at its campus with aplomb. The school has acknowledged and appreciated the contribution of its real workforce the ancillary staff. The students presented a short skit to show the importance of labour in our daily life. Some students also recited poems for workers.   • Shemrock School arranged fun games on Labour Day for class D staff members

    Mohali: Labour Day is celebrated at Shemrock Sr. Sec. School, Sector 69  Mohali. The function kicked started with a speech welcoming the workers and acknowledging their hard work . A fun-packed celebration was organized for class D staff members of the school. Students showcased their talent by participating in fancy dress competitions whereby they were dressed as community helpers and spoke on the profession for which they were dressed up. The staff D members had a great day as they enthusiastically participated in Fun Games which were specially organized for them. Special refreshment was also served to Class D Staff after school hours. Workers were overwhelmed watching the function and expressed their gratitude towards the school management, teachers and students for their endeavour. They were more than delighted to receive cards, flowers and chocolate as a token of love and honour for their services. Cash prizes were given to the winners of the games. While speaking at the moment Principal Parneet Sohal said that this celebration is a good way of thanking them for the priceless services they provide and instilling in students a sense of dignity of labour and emphasised the value of each and every member of the team in the progress of the organization.
